Best of the Best Shepard's Pie
Last week Jerralea from Jerri's Journey asked for my Shepard's Pie recipe so I'm sharing it with ya'll (hello to all my southern readers:)
I love Shepard's pie -- that heavenly mixture of meat, gravy, potatoes and vegetables. I've shied away from making Shepard's Pie because I couldn't get the meat and vegetable mixture to taste just right. It came out way too bland for my taste.
After some tweaking I've finally arrived at the best tasting Shepard's Pie, ever. Not to brag or anything, ahem. A beef stew seasoning packet gives the extra flavor boost I've been looking for. In the past I've used cream of something soup and beef gravy, but it just too bland.
Best of The Best Shepard's Pie
1 Pound Ground Beef
1/2 Cup Chopped Onion
1 16oz Bag of Frozen Mixed Vegetables
1 Beef Stew Seasoning Packet (I like McCormick's)
2 Cups Water
5 Medium Sized White Potatoes
1/2 Cup Milk
1 Tbsp Butter
1 Cup Shredded Sharp Cheddar Cheese
Pinch of Dried Parsley
Pinch of Paprika
Pinch of Salt and Pepper
Brown ground beef and onion in a large skillet until well done. Add the frozen mixed vegetables, 2 cups of water and beef stew seasoning packet. Cook on medium heat for 15 minutes. Peel the potatoes, place in a pan of water and boil until tender. Drain potatoes and place back in the pan on very low heat; mash potatoes. Add milk, butter, 3/4 cup of cheddar cheese and salt and pepper to taste. Stir until the cheese is melted.
Pre-heat oven to 375 degrees.
Pour the meat and vegetable mixture into a greased casserole dish (ideally this mixture should be pretty wet, but not runny); top with the cheesy mashed potatoes. Sprinkle the remaining 1/4 cup cheddar cheese, paprika and dried parsley over the top. Bake uncovered for about 30 to 40 minutes.
This dish re-heats very well.

I ordered a pre-made Shepards Pie from Schwan's Home Delivery service one time, and that's when I figured out that a packet of beef stew mix is the key to a great shepards pie! I think that's how Schwan's makes theirs!
Is Shepherd's Pie commonly called Shepards Pie in the US?
Strange, but the recipe sounds right and looks nice!
